I feel like I'm getting ripped off by Sterling International

Postby NESTLE » Thu Jul 11, 2013 2:14 am

SI did an in-home survey and estimated 200 cft. Their quote for 200 cft at that time was $2570. The other companies that did surveys had lower estimates for my shipment, so I asked SI to send me a quote for 150 cft and the cost for that was $2070.

They picked up my things last week and they had hugely overestimated the volume of the shipment since it ended up being only 70 cft. I knew their minimum was 100 cft and I understood that I would be getting charged for 100 cft instead of 70 cft. However, what I did not expect was for the 70 cft cost to be $2012.

To summarize, according to SI:
200 cft = $2570
150 cft = $2070
100 cft (what I'm actually getting charged for) = $2012

I was not happy about this and emailed them to ask for an explanation. This was their response:

Thanks for your note. We did adjust the price to reflect 100 cubic feet, which is the minimum size shipment to Scotland. You are correct the cost to ship 100 to 150 is not much different.

And although you did ship only 70 cubic feet, we are charged by all parties based on the minimum of 100 cubic feet.

Note that in my email to them I did not argue at all about the fact that I was getting charged for 100 - I explicitly said I understood that.

I honestly feel like I'm getting ripped off here.

I understand that you feel like you are getting ripped off, however I do have some comments:

1 - Many companies won't even offer a price for under 200 cubic feet.

2 - The costs really do bottom out at some point - in this case it seems it is at 150 cubic feet - meaning that the cost of shipping 1 cubic foot and 150 cubic feet are virtually the same.

3 - If you feel you are being treated unfairly, contact the FMC - they handle disputes for moves from the USA.

Thank you for your response.

For point 1, I understand that but one of the reasons I picked Sterling International was that they had a low minimum (100 cft according to them).

For point 2, again, they had told me that the minimum was 100 cft (i.e. shipping 50 cft is the same as 100 cft, but above that the cost increases).

I am planning on contacting someone about this (thanks for mentioning the FMC), because this company has been unprofessional since I first booked them. This was just the last straw for me.

When they said you had a 100 cubic foot minimum, did you ask them what it would cost?

Yes - it was $1710 but it was in April, when I first started looking for a shipping company. They could easily say that prices went up since then (right?).

Yes they could say that since the summer is the busiest time for moving, and demand has increased.

I suspect the FMC is going to say nothing wrong has happened.

Why don't you ask them, and send them the quote from then?
