Highly satisfied

Postby dewey » Wed May 16, 2012 10:15 am

We took the recommendation of Movingscam.com in hiring Broadway Express and couldn't be more delighted with the services we were provided for our move from Wisconsin to California. Arranging for the move (through Diana Nuxoll) was swift, courteous and professional. Any question we had was immediately answered and the process (done almost totally over the internet) was simple and straightforward. Unlike some contractual negotiations, our price for the move went downward instead of upward as the final plans fell into place. And there were no last minute fees, taxes or hidden costs tacked onto the contract. What a welcome surprise.

The move itself, loading and unloading, was exactly as advertised. Don, our Broadway Express driver, was in contact with us a few days ahead of the move to set a schedule and on moving day he showed up right on time and was a HUGE help in getting the truck properly loaded for the journey. Don has a "no nonsense" approach to the loading process and kept our crew and helpers moving and on their toes. We had the 53 foot trailer entirely filled and ready to pull out within five hours of when we started...which was well under the 8 to 10 hours we had anticipated.

On the destination end of the move, everything went off without a glitch. Again, Don directed the crew and made sure things kept moving along in a timely fashion. He even stuck around afterwards to share a lunch and joined in the fun acting as "photographer" to take group pictures of our friends in the moving crew.

As with most moves, we experienced some minor dings and scratches on a few items. But in every instance this damage was the direct result of our own packing and boxing efforts rather than with Broadway. In fact, we included our pride and joy, a $50,000 street rod, on the load and the car made the journey with only one minor glitch. The license plate light vibrated loose and was detached. An easy fix. Other than that the car was in perfect shape.

I can't say our experience will be the same as everyone else, but we got bids from full service movers (we pack the boxes but the mover gets them from house to trailer) such as United Van Lines and the difference in price was jaw dropping. The full service estimates were all in the neighborhood of $21,000 to $23,000...which included transporting of the '32 Ford. Broadway's initial estimate was one-third of that and by the time we actually signed the contract the price was reduced another $300.

Bottom line, if we ever had to move again we would hire Broadway Express in a heartbeat.

So thank you Broadway Express. And thank you Tim and Jeff for providing this great resource at Movingscam.com.

Why so few BE reviews within the last 4 years? The first 4 years takes up about 21 pages. The last 4 years take up about 3 pages w/only 2 reviews for 2012 so far.

btw, this is not a criticism but a genuine question. I'm researching BE for a move and was surprised to find so few reviews within the last several years.

We can only post what comes in. Diane hasn't been as active lately, and she was always the champs for getting people to come back to write their reviews. At some point the whole process of finding a mover became less about asking us who to choose and the consumer doing all the reading and research on their own and not really getting involved with the message boards.

I see. That's too bad. Any recommendations on where else to read and research Broadway Express?

Hello everyone,

Here is my review of Broadway Express.

Our quote:
Chicago, IL to Tucson, AZ
11' - $2,345
Scheduled load date: June 28
Estimated arrival date: July 1-9

The facts:
- Two days prior to our move, we were told the date was being pushed back to June 29. At the same time, our driver told us he would only be taking the load to Broadway's Effingham, IL warehouse until another truck could be procured to take it to Tucson.
- Our load sat in Broadway's warehouse from June 29 - July 11. Broadway's excuse was that no drivers were available to take our load to Tucson.
- At some point, our load was transferred to another truck at Broadway's warehouse. The same care used to pack the truck in Chicago was not used by Broadway to re-pack our load. Multiple items were damaged, and I provided photo evidence to Broadway.
- The truck arrived on July 16, a full week late. This was particularly hard on us because my wife was seven months pregnant, and we were living in an empty house with no furniture.
- We were initially refunded $234.50. Upon pressing Broadway about the damaged furniture, they eventually refunded another $150.

My thoughts:
In general, I did not find Broadway to be very communicative. They could have made me a lot happier by simply calling me more to give status updates. Instead, it was me picking up the phone and sending emails the majority of the time.

Our drivers were Ron Fulmer and Don Rodgers. Both were fine to deal with. We had paid movers on both ends, but I still paid Ron to help supervise the loading process and ensure careful packing in Chicago. Of course, none of that mattered once Broadway moved our load at their warehouse and damaged several items.

Our sales rep was Todd Daily. He was not able to help much beyond the sales process, referring me to Linda Blake-Miller, the head of dispatch. Linda has a very pleasant demeanor and was very apologetic. When I pressed her for an additional refund for the damaged furniture, she had to clear it with the owner. Throughout pestering Broadway about the refund, which took place from July 23 to August 21, I was told only the owner can authorize customer refunds. He owns five businesses, and is only in the office for short periods of time. Additionally, he was in the process of relocating his classic car business, so this made him even more scarce when it came to talking to Linda about our refund.

The final word:
Although Broadway refunded me an additional $150, that's really not very much money, considering how hard I had to press them for it. The one week arrival delay (making it 17 days without any furniture) was hard to swallow. They didn't tell us about transferring our load in their warehouse until two days prior to the move. They damaged our furniture. I had to initiate most of the communication.

Bottom line: pick a different moving company.

Alternate bottom line.....pick a different moving day....out of the 365 available days for moving, June 28-29 is the absolute worst two days of the year. Yeah, I know, that's when you needed to move, blah blah, but it's still the worst possible dates. Any and every moving company has problems on those dates at the end of June. being a week late is terrible, but it could have been worse....hundreds of entire truck loads all around the country were late that week, many more than one week, and most of those people paid a lot more to move than 11 feet.

Archie, I'm curious. Do your salespeople warn customers about that when they get their estimates? Because I don't see how an individual is going to know that on their own.

this summer, for the first time, our pricing was adjusted daily based on volume and historical data, so if somebody wanted/had to move June 25-30, they paid a little more. Kind of like airline pricing on available seats left on the plane.

But for years, we would try ( not always succeed) to hold that last week of May, June, July and August open for better shipments, higher revenue, larger, etc. You can't move somebody on June 30 for the same price you charge on February 30th. :)

But did the customer understand WHY they were paying more for those days, and about the possibility of delay?

They knew the pricing was based on the date selected, and were given options to adjust pick up dates for better rates, but I do not think delays were/are actively discussed, that is such a negative selling point that I cannot imagine somebody 'going there'. But then again, those dates for loading also usually carry delivery spreads that are also somewhat more loose.

Archie,

That's not correct. I was never told I was paying more for moving during that window. In fact, until you just revealed that information, I had no idea I was paying more, nor did Broadway ever mention during the sales process that those dates were the busiest time of year.

Maybe it could have been worse, but perhaps Broadway shouldn't take more reservations than they can handle if it's well-known that's the busiest time of year.

I would have much rather been turned away, or at the very least been told that there was a high probability that there would be problems. Broadway did neither.

I did not mean it to infer that you paid more, I think the question was directed towards me, and the procedures our salespeople use during peak times. Our pricing is not the same as BE, so it's not totally the same view.

I was asking Archie, not talking about BE. I don't know what BE's prices are. BE operates differently than the mover-only van lines, because after they pick up your stuff, they fill the rest of the trailer with freight going the same direction. I would not consider them a "mover", but a "carrier" since you can't get full service from them. You can add on things to get the same effect, but they're not full service.

This was our 7th move and 5th move across the country. Using Broadway Express, our move went smoothly and our belongings arrived safely at our new home. We were pleased with the level of service and friendliness at Broadway Express. Especially we were pleased with our very helpful driver, Joe. We would recommend Broadway Express to others who are moving out of state-- it sure beats a U-Haul!! Because Broadway Express bases their price on linear feet and not weight, we saved thousands! Our load was around 20,000 lbs!
We were able to use one entire 53 ft truck for just our belongings (5 bedroom home)- we would have had to use 2 trucks with other companies.

The only caveat is to be aware of whether or not your belongings are insured (you may have to purchase separate, additional insurance to cover them).
