Checking on a California license number

Postby mattinla » Thu Jul 01, 2004 3:58 pm

The local mover I was going to use seems to no longer be in business.. I have several I want to call for estimates.. is there a web site where I can run their CA license numbers. They all start with a "T".

THANKS

The three movers are: Mighty Movers T189200 (which quoted me $59.50 per hour plus something called "double drive time")

An unnamed mover T146227 - waiting for quote

There is no web site to look up California PUC license information but you can call the PUC and ask them:

California Public Utilities Commission
800-877-8867
http://www.cpuc.ca.gov

Matt, remind me, are you in Louisiana going to CA, or the other way around?

Actually, I am in Los Angeles and heading to Florida with ABF.. I need the local movers here to get my stuff to the ABF terminal.

I have called California PUC several times, and always get the "leave a message" recording, and then another recording saying "mailbox full"... I had already thought I would go with mightymovers.com based upon my conversation with them... but had not checked the BBB. Did that today, and they have a very unsatisfactory report there.. should have checked that first, I guess. I might just rent a truck and hire some friends to get my stuff to the ABF terminal.

Did you also try the CMSA? (California Moving & Storage Association). www.thecmsa.org, 714-236-2060. I think they can verify license numbers.

That stinks about the PUC, you'd think they could answer a phone call!!

Nancy, do you think Sterling Van Lines might be able to handle a little shuttle-type thing like this?

Yep, any local mover can do it. Sterling does have a PUC permit. Matt, you should expect to pay about $70 to 90 per hour for a truck and two men.

Matt, if you call Sterling make sure that it's the one based in LA (800-264-6313) because the Sterling based in FL is a scammer. As Nancy says, any local mover might be able to send out a couple of guys and a truck.

Thanks for the help guys! A good friend has recommended someone to me here in LA. A man a truck and a helper kind of thing.... Makes me a bit nervous, but I trust my friend and he swears they did a great job. It's $75/hour and he will bill in half hour increments... wish me luck! This weekend I am packing packing packing...

That really isn't much of a price difference from a licensed, insured mover. What are you getting for that price? Are these guys insured? what if one of them throws their back out while on your property? moving your belongings? A personal injury lawyer's dream.
