Re: Ideas about women and moving

Women are certainly more cut out for the sales aspect of this job. Their attention to detail and the fact that most of the customers we deal with directly are women gives them a distinct advantage. We have some female packers and they get better reviews than the men who pack for us. Originally, I th...

Re: The Rise and Fall of the Professional Mover, by Archie White

Archie, It's nice to hear someone actually say what most of us are thinking. Some of my competition (those who I dislike) won't admit that things are bad. One owner said he's busier than ever. Notwithstanding the idiotic comments of some, it's a bad time to be in this business, fuel, competition, re...

Re: *Bekins / Seacure Moving - South Jersey to Bay Area, CA

Archie, That's a great post. What baffles me is that the salespeople want more guaranteed money, car expense, fuel, meals, etc., plus they want to give max discounts on every job. I went back to selling last year because we couldn't afford the salespeople we had, they were bringing in less than they...

Re: NAVL - To Join Or Not To Join

Gentlemen (and ladies if there are any out there), This forum for discussion is invaluable. I appreciate all of your opinions and input. I would be willing to believe that Unigroup is somehow connected to almost half the military carriers (SCACs) out there. National Van Lines, Interstate, Carlyle an...

Re: NAVL - To Join Or Not To Join

"The one question that seemed to jump to the front is what advantage do you think your company will achieve by associating with a larger van line? Answering this is going to be harder than you think." Rick, The advantage is in the branding. Most of the jobs that we estimate and do not book, go to la...

Re: Review of PODS for cross-country move and storage

You shouldn't complain about the loading and unloading, you used PODS. The whole point of PODS is to save money by doing it yourself. I'm sure you paid more to the 3 separate companies than if you hired 1 professional mover.

NAVL - To Join Or Not To Join

We are a medium sized moving and storage company (4 straight trucks and 5 tractor trailers). We are coming to the end of our contract with a small, "lower tier" van line. We contacted the top two van lines, one told us right off the bat that our market was closed (too many agents already here). We'r...
