Carmack Amendment

Can someone please explain to me: 1. What exactly is the Carmack Amendment? 2. What does its legalese mean? 3. Are there any efforts to repeal it? 4. Would either of the new House Bills supercede it, our would consumers still be unable to file lawsuits for fraud? Just trying to understand.

Re: CA to FL Move - Part 2

There might be a small charge from the scales that do the re-weigh. I was quoted $10 for mine. Not, big, really, but there.

Re: [Info] New legislation (HR-1070) needs support!

This is the letter I wrote to Rep. Moran (HB-1070 co-sponsor), who happens to be from my home district. Please feel free to use it as a template to send your own letter of thanks to other supporters. Representative Moran, I want to deeply thank you for co-sponsoring HB-1070. Last year I was horribly...

Whoops, sorry about that. And Moran is the Rep, not senator, for my home district. I'll send him that letter now.

Shame. Supporter Moran from VA is no longer a senator. I was going to send him a letter of thanks. Do we have an updated list of 1070 supporters?

Re: What Consumers Need to Know About HR-2928

On what dates were each of the two bills (1070 and 2928) announced, and about how long might it take until a decision is made? I'm not clear on how the House schedules its debates on each bill. Anyone know?

Re: National Moving Network

A whole lot more than my deposit was taken, they completed the move through AY Transport. $447 deposit to NMN, $1300 quote, $4300 final bill, we paid them $1900, got our stuff, they're demanding $2400 (LONG story short). Sure wish I had done the research before they took our stuff, like Deposit did....

Re: Totally scammed by movers and now they are suing us!

Sorry, I didn't mean to give out wrong info. When I said my suit would take place here in VA, my lawyer and I had talked about NMN's contract. On the back, under their clauses, they say that any court action has to take place in Florida. Since I did not sign agreeing to those clauses, my lawyer said...

Re: Progressive Van Lines/AY Transport Sam

I did not know that, thank you, Guest. Do you know what the circumstances involved in the unbinding are? I'm only going from the information in the Rights and Responsibilities book that the DOT makes movers give out (which, as you pointed out, doesn't really matter much in the end).

Sigh...

Re: Totally scammed by movers and now they are suing us!

Yep, me, too. AY Transport has threatened a lawsuit to collect the $2000 I have not paid them. We do have a lawyer. Suits in our case have to be filed here in VA, on our turf. I read it as a complete bluff. Seems they would shell out as much in expenses to fight it as they would win from me. Plus, I...

Re: Progressive Van Lines/AY Transport Sam

Sad but true, Jamie. Which is why nobody should use a broker, and NOBODY should hire a company from the Internet. Only hire someone who is willing to come to your house to make a quote. Ask about binding estimates. They may cost more, but at least you'll be sure that amount is all you will pay.

Re: National Moving Network

Dear Deposit, Well, it seems like you have the upper hand now. While, technically, NMN might have a point in that you canceled your move after their 7-day-before-move time frame, your credit card company thought enough of it to refund your money. Since you now have your money, and they did not move ...
