Re: An ABF self-move concern

My computer, monitor, and all peripherals weathered an ABF move just fine; just be sure to use the boxes they originally came in. After all, it was a cargo truck that originally got 'em to the store you bought 'em from. In fact, in all of our many, many boxes, we didn't have ANY internal damage, onl...

Re: My ABF ordeal (Burbank to Seattle)

If they won't deliver to downtown Seattle, then fine, but they should say that; the "Seattle city limits" incorporate a whole lot of territory that shouldn't be a problem for ABF trailers.

Re: My ABF ordeal (Burbank to Seattle)

Diane, you ought to ask about that "Seattle city limits" thing too. That's just weird; it's not like it's Manhattan.

Re: Box Packing Tips

About books: use SMALL boxes. A large box full of books would be awful to deal with.

(For extra fun, fill an entire box with National Geographics!)

Re: PODS, Portable Storage On Demand

ABF's pricing is dependent on a lot of things: day of the week, time of the month (end of the month is more expensive), and, apparently, which month. Your best price will come on a Tuesday or Wednesay in the first half of the month. There may also be some "last-minute" discount stuff built into it, ...

Re: Advise please-Sell car or ship car

MusicMom's suggestion is excellent: get a friend to drive with you. Maybe you can even convince them to take the wheel the whole way if you buy all their meals and let them control the stereo. A one-way flight from Jacksonville back to Buffalo costs $84 -- but that's a cost you'll pay no matter what...

Re: PODS, Portable Storage On Demand

Oh, the other apples-to-oranges thing here is that with PODS you get one free month of storage at your destination. But that ain't worth $3100. And by the way, I just did ABF again. 16 feet this time, Seattle-Detroit, May 2: $2183. (It's cheaper than before because the first time I'd said June 1.) V...

Re: PODS, Portable Storage On Demand

I just went to PODS' site and ran through a quote on a Seattle-to-Detroit move, since I just got ABF's numbers for those cities for a comparison in another thread (the one about FlexMove in Canada). The result: although it's not exactly apples-to-apples (the PODS container is 4 feet longer than the ...

Re: PODS, Portable Storage On Demand

There's nothing remarkable about the content, script-wise: they just show pods being dropped off at a house, put on a forklift, etc. But they're entirely computer animated, in that pseudo-3D ray-traced style. Like "Toy Story," but much lower budget. Or like "The Sims," I guess. The same ad, but with...

Re: PODS, Portable Storage On Demand

I'd refuse to patronize a company that uses really bad computer-animated video-game-esque cartoon characters in their advertisements. (You always wonder, when you see commercials on daytime TV for those unaccredited computer animation schools, "where is the demand for that crap?") It tells me someth...

Re: Anyone know Service like ABF UPack in Canada to Canada m

Just for kicks, I ran a quote through flexmove.ca's system for a 12-foot container (955 cubic feet) from Vancouver to Toronto; it came up as CAN$3178 (US$2563) with tax.

For comparison, ABF quotes US$2305 for 12 linear feet from Seattle to Detroit -- a little less, but in the same ballpark.

Re: Good Place to Buy Boxes?

I'm all for helping small family-owned businesses too, but Uline isn't one of them -- family-owned, yes, but not small! According to their Web site, they have over 1,000 employees at 7 locations around the country.
